The Weekend That Was: Barkley Owned, Another Historic Loss, Irish for Real?, My New Favorite Player, SEC Joke Coaches

While it is the surprises, upsets and a sense of loyalty to a team that draws us to college football, there are a few truths that seem inevitable. A few of those came true this weekend: Virginia Tech begins the year in the top 10 and falls to an inferior team, Alabama beats Arkansas, USC starts in the top 5 and is a national championship favorite and falls, and Notre Dame wins three games and moves up the polls quickly. Now that you have the gist of Week Three in football, let's get to the nitty gritty.

Barkley remains defeated versus Stanford
STANFORD OWNS BARKLEY & CO.: At some point, what Stanford did/is doing will no longer be a fluke. Cardinal coach David Shaw has to get credit. He is Andrew Luck-less and is still pulling off 'upsets' of the No. 2 team in the country. I say "'upsets'" because it should no longer come as a surprise when he is able to beat the California team from the south. Maybe, just maybe, Shaw will be able to sustain some of the success his predecessors (Jim Harbaugh and Andrew Luck) began. I am all up for nerds ruling the football world.

Stanford is a rarity in college football. Not only do they all make 34's on their ACTs but they know who they are and what they can and can not do. They know they run the football well with a huge push from the big uglies upfront, which creates an obvious, enormous mismatch for USC, who is setup to beat the likes of Oregon.

Matt Barkley will graduate having never beaten Stanford, which is incredible when you look at the history of these two programs.

ANOTHER HISTORIC LOSS: Remember the questions I brought up last week after Arkansas blew a 28-7 lead to University Louisiana-Monore? There are more this week. Instead of doing listing those, here is some historical perspective of what a team that was beat by ULM in 2007 (Alabama) did on Saturday in Fayetteville.

The Tide shut out the Hogs at home for the first time since 1966, a 44-0 loss to the Baylor, but that was two years post national championship. It was the worst loss for the Razorbacks since a 70-17 show from the USC Trojans. It was an embarrassing day for Arkansas, and while the weather did not help keep fans in their seat, neither did their play on the field.

Injured Razorback quarterback admitted he thought some of his teammates quit, which is a direct reflection of coaching. There's good reason to be worried as Rutgers comes to Arkansas this week.

If anything, this makes The Game of the Century III (Alabama at LSU) all the more anticipated, and as my old man said, no doubt there is a Pop Tart sale in Arkansas.

Johnson has been "The Beast" for a while.
MY FAVORITE PLAYER IS A VOLUNTEER: Is there anything Tennessee sophomore A.J. Johnson can not do? He was named to the All-SEC freshman team a year ago and now is starting to show out on the offensive side too from the Wildcat formation.

Not only does he make grown-man tackles on defense, but the Volunteer captain scored a rushing touchdown against Florida.

He did the same thing in high school, too.

A Gainesville, Georgia native, he dominated this area for four years like few have and remains a local legend. If he continues on his current path, he will soon be a legend in the Knoxville area as well before making his way to the professional ranks.

NOTRE DAME IS FOR REAL (maybe): The Irish get their fair, and maybe more, share of articles and columns written about them, but anytime you go on the road, in a night game, and defeat a top 10 team, you start getting press for all the right reasons.

Coach Brian Kelley, who was brought over from Cincinnati for his offensive prowess, has started building his program from the defensive side of the ball. Now, other than Alabama and LSU, he may have the top defensive front in the country and the best linebacker in Manti Te'o. Kelley will build his offense no doubt, and if both sides of the ball progress like they seem to be doing, the Irish could be trouble in the future.

HOW QUICKLY CAN CHIZIK BE REPLACED: It's really a three-way race between Arkansas' John L. Smith, Auburn's Gene Chizik, and Kentucky's Joker Phillips to see who will be fired first. Two of the three will definitely be told to seek employment elsewhere come season's end, but Chizik has enough equity built up from a national championship two years ago.

After two dismal performances from his quarterback Kiehl Frazier, these games are much more like what we expected from Chizik when he came from Iowa State. This is what a Chizik team minus a $200,000 quarterback looks like.

That's what a Hilltoppers look like after they get their first SEC win.
KENTUCKY'S BIG JOKE(er): Get it? Their coach's name is Joker and that's what he has made the Wildcats in the eyes of football fans. We have all heard Kentucky fans say the only sport they care about is basketball -- and horseracing. However, there are better ways to let everyone know that other than getting beat by Western Kentucky. Heck, they've only been an official FBS program for four years!

Sure you make all SEC fans proud during March and early April, but there is no excuse for this. Bye, bye Joker.

The Five SEC Players I Would (And Would Not) Hang Out With

I recently had a conversation with a college friend of mine of a college quarterback's, now thanks to the internet  infamous tattoo. It led to the idea for this post. Without further ado, here is the list of players in the SEC, given the opportunity, I would like or would not to hang out with in no particular order.

The "Woulds":
Even Nick Saban likes Barrett Jones
Barrett Jones, Alabama center- A 2011 unanimous All-America selection and Outland Trophy winner, Jones is not only a beast on the field at 6-foot-5, 311-pounds; but he also holds a 4.0 at Alabama, while working on his masters and preparing for the CPA exam. The over-sized nerd, once finished 15th in his age division at a Scrabble competition. Oh and he has played violin continuously since age three.

Jordan Rodgers, Vanderbilt quarterback- The community college transfer followed began the 2011 season as the No. 2 quarterback on the Commodore depth chart before taking over the starting job and topping Jay Cutler's freshmen year in total yards gained. I would hang out with Jordan on the outside shot he would bring his brother Aaron along, Super Bowl MVP and champion for the Green Bay Packers.

Knile Davis, Arkansas running back and Tyler Wilson, Arkansas quarterback- I went with a combo here for the same reason no parent wants to choose their favorite child. Davis and Wilson are arguably the top players in the SEC at their respective positions. In addition, reports came out that the duo had conversations with former Razorback coach, and poor motorcycle-driving connoisseur, Bobby Petrino over the summer. Wouldn't you like to know exactly what was said?

T.J. Moe, Missouri wide receiver- In my last post, I wrote how Moe stole the show at SEC media days with his comments of how the SEC is better than the Big 12. Other than that,  I do not know much about the No. 1 wideout on the Tiger's depth chart. However, I do know if we were to hang out there is a strong possibility I would have more one-liners to add to my arsenal, which is enough to make the list.

Johnson, stud on and off the field.
A.J. Johnson, Tennessee linebacker- Would I be a fan of his had I not moved to Gainesville, Johnson's hometown two years ago? Probably not, but after doing so and hearing some of the local lore I would like to talk to this kid and get the his full story. I have watched him on some YouTube highlights, and the more I watch the more I wish I could have seen the then Red Elephant in person. Locals here say he is a great all-around person.

Honorable Mention-

Bacarri Rambo, Georgia safety- He was called Fudge before he changed his name in grade school. I would ask for the full story.

Barkevious Mingo, LSU defensive end- The name game again. What is its origin?

Kiero Small, Arkansas fullback- The 5-foot10, 255-pound Small is a willing block seeker in the second and third level. He broke more than ten opponent's helmets and at least eight of his own in 2011.

The "Would Nots":

Tyrann Mathieu, LSU cornerback- If an explanation is necessary, just Google is name. The Honey Badger is a good ball player but has a number of character issues.

Da'Rick Rogers, Tennesee wide receiver- Yet another prima donna wide receiver, who tweets about hanging out with high school kids in hot tubs when he goes home to Calhoun, Georgia. Rogers is talented receiver who used his five-star ranking to shortchange Georgia. He switched his commitment in the last hour to the Volunteers by finagling a scholarship for his high school quarterback. A season later, he publicly announced that he was going to transfer to Georgia State after a disappointing season. These plans never worked out, and now he is still giving his all -- if that possible -- for Tennessee today.

Hard to believe the guy on the right has the art on the right inked on his chest.
A.J. McCarron, Alabama quarterback- Though he is not the reason this blog was created, he comes in a close second because of his tattoo. When one decides to go through with a terrible permanent marking on their body, they prove to me of their poor decision-making skills, which would make hanging out with him not so fun. McCarron's tattoo does just that (and he strives to be just like John Parker Wilson, Bama Bangs and all).

Brad Wing, LSU punter- Football players do not generally respect the masters of special teams (kickers and punters). Sure it was a good play, and another gutsy call by LSU coach Les Miles, but taunting the opposing team after scoring your only career touchdown (which was called back) as a punter is a quick way to find yourself on this list. Cocky punters? Nah.

Bray needs no nameplate on his jersey. He
already has a permanent one on his back.
Tyler Bray, Tennessee quarterback- The Volunteer signal caller is the proud owner of the star tattoo which brought this whole post to life. Since telling the press at SEC Media Days how proud he is of his star back-branding, Bray has thrown a temper tantrum after allegedly being told he would be evicted from his apartment complex. With his cannon-like right arm, he threw beer bottles and golf balls at a neighbor's car. Although he apologized and is paying for the damages, I am not up for a night of taking out anger through vandalism of private property.

Dishonorable Mention

Philip Lutzenkirchen, Auburn tight end- He added to the myth that white men can't dance with The Lutzie against Alabama in 2010.

Thoughts and opinions of my list? Or others you would want to add? Comment below.

National Signing Day

Throughout this world wide web, there is an abundance of places where you can find who "won" signing day. Was it Alabama, or was it Texas? Which university was able to lure that particular recruiting site's number one high school player to a certain school? Was it Missouri, or was it Florida State? Not here boys and girls. Here we will take a closer look at the fanfare that has become signing day and some schools successful days. But in no way am I declaring a winner or, even worse, as some claim a national championship. For you NFL junkies that do not understand a crazed college football fan's obsession, imagine the free agency period and the draft all in one day. Here are a few news and notes...

Let it be known that I try hard to not get entangled in the web of rankings built by sites such as Rivals.com, Scout.com, or 247sports.com about certain prospects. These sites try to project an 18 year-old's football abilities three years in advance. It is an inexact science and impossible to predict. This is not to say that I, just like many of you, do not drool over YouTube videos of their top prospects' skill levels (Johnathan Gray everyone) , but I know that just because a website gives a young man who is 6-foot-7, weighs in a 270, runs a 4.8 second forty-yard dash, and physically dominates top high school competition only  "two-stars" that not much stock can be taken their celestial rating system. Spend some time. Watch some film. And wait to see if the coach of your beloved team can do with the prospect's skills.

Saban "bought" a heinous diamond sweater,
but he can sell his program.
That being said, based on this star rating system, Alabama signed more four and five stars than I ever have in my dynasty on NCAA 2009. (I still play the 09 version because Darren McFadden adorns the cover). They signed more than twice as many prospects from ESPN's top 150 athletes than any other SEC school. With the talent accumulated during his tenure at LSU and now Alabama, the Crimson Tide's coach has shown why he has many changing the acronym NSD from National Signing Day to Nick Saban Day.

The University of Georgia was able to come away with the top player in four different states, thanks to a late fax from the nation's top outside linebacker and Valdosta, Georgia resident, Josh Harvey-Clemons. The poor kid came on national television to announce his intentions to become a Bulldog. His grandfather and legal guardian had other plans. With Valdosta being closer to Florida, most of Harvey-Clemons' family wished to see him as a Gator come fall. After a little embarrassment, the kid won out and will run out in Red and Black in August.

The famed "Chick-fil-a" recruit, McKinzy
In as much preparation he did for the day, calls, texts, emails, official and unofficial visits, in-home visits and more, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney could have done nothing more to convince Cassanova McKinzy to become a Tiger. Well, maybe Swinney could have done one more thing, built a Chick-fil-a on the Clemson campus. The best named recruit in the country said he chose Auburn over Clemson because, "they (Clemson) have no Chick-fil-A on campus."

Stanford signed three consensus five-star prospects to their offensive line. Andrew Luck's presence carries on though he will be in the NFL. However, if you are a big boy that wants a physical run game, where better to go than to block for Barry Sanders Jr., who also signed with the Cardinal.

Not to be confused with that above school out west, Samford added 18 new players for the 2012 team. Much praise was given to the Bulldogs in Southern Conference circles by guys that pay attention to recruiting much more closely than you and me. If you have not been paying attention to what coach Pat Sullivan, the 1972 Heisman trophy winner, has been doing with my alma mater in Birmingham, which chances are you haven't, you should. The Dogs are going places... hopefully.

The Weekend That Will Be: Week 13

Arkansas at LSU- Though The Battle for the Golden Boot is not getting the hype that LSU-Alabama received, it could have as much to do with who plays in the national title as "The Game of the Century" does. The Hogs have won three of the last four games and are one of the few offenses that can challenge the Blitzing Bengals. It is the blitzing that has cost the Tigers in the past and can again. Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson has actually been more efficient when faced with five or more pass rushers (17 of 18 and 2 touchdowns the last two weeks). The game will hinge on whether the Razorback offensive line can slow down LSU's rush. As underdogs, Arkansas should cover the 14 point line but LSU is on a mission and will eventually wear down the Razorbacks.

Penn State at Wisconsin- Amidst all of the turmoil in Happy Valley, the Nittany Lions have put together a solid season and will travel to Madison for the de facto Big Ten Legends Division Championship, with the winner heading to play Michigan State in the first ever Big Ten Conference Championship game. Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson is the Badgers' main attraction, but watch running back Monte Ball and his Big Ten record 30 touchdowns against the nation's third best scoring defense that has allowed only more than 20 points twice this season. Wisconsin has more skill on both sides of the ball and will win, setting up a rematch with MSU, the team that gave the Badgers their first loss.

Alabama at Auburn-  A chance to participate in the national title game is again on the line in the Iron Bowl. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of living in the state of Alabama during college football season or attending this rivalry game, it's something you should look into. There is no where else in the country where college football -- and the results of a rivalry game -- means as much as it does in the Heart of Dixie. Alabama running back Trent Richardson, his 1,380 yards and 20 touchdowns have just about wrapped up the state's third straight Heisman -- as was predicted earlier here. For Auburn to have a chance the defense has to take advantage of forced turnovers. Unfortunately for Auburn fans the visiting team will leave with the 'W,' as it has been for the last two seasons.

Other picks (winners in bold)

Georgia at Georgia Tech- UGA locked up a place in the SEC Championship, but would love to cap of the regular season with a win over their in-state rivals. After going 1-9 in their last 10 meetings, Tech is looking to slow down the Bulldogs winning ways. The Bulldogs are too strong for the Yellow Jackets and earn their tenth consecutive win.

Clemson at South Carolina-The Tigers finally pulled their classic Clemson, losing in blowout fashion to a then sub-.500 NC State team. USC has been discounted as a good team, but their only two losses are to Auburn and Arkansas. The Gamecock defense is one of the best around and handles the Clemson at home.

Ole Miss at Mississippi State- The Nuttcracker -- or Dan Mullen as he more formally known -- is a huge reason Houston will be out of a job after Saturday. The Rebels have lost two in games to Mullen's Bulldogs and looked embarrassingly bad in SEC play. Ole Miss gave up on this season a month ago making a State blowout win for the Egg Bowl even easier.

Ohio State at Michigan
Notre Dame at Stanford
UCLA at USC
Florida State at Florida

The Weekend That Will Be: Week 11

Nebraska at Penn State- The lack of response to what happened in 1999, and tragically before 1999, will have an impact on this weekend’s game. For the first time since Harry Truman was serving as the U.S. president, Penn State will take the field without Joe Paterno. Trying to strictly concentrate at the football game in Happy Valley is next to impossible. The student body will have a “Blue-Out,” (as opposed to the normal “White-Out”) to help raise awareness and money for sexually abused children. It is hard to know how the Nittany Lions on the field will respond. Hopefully, they will respond positively on Senior Night amidst the controversy. This top-rated defense stops the Nebraska rushing attack and the senior class wins their last home game.

Oregon at Stanford- The last Cardinal loss came 14 games ago to the Ducks in Eugene, Ore. Like last year, the winner of this game is the PAC-12’s front-runner for a spot in the BCS National Championship. Similar to last week’s biggest game (LSU-Alabama) defense will be the difference. Can the Oregon defense, which has been rolling in the second-half of games since their loss to No. 1 LSU in the opening week of this season, stop Luck, the Heisman favorite? Don’t count on it. Luck and Co.’s powerful rushing attack will wear down the Ducks and prove too much in Palo Alto.

Auburn at Georgia- Someone took me up on my offer two weeks ago, and I will gladly attend the game in Athens this on Saturday for my first of two consecutive weeks of watching the Tigers. The Deep South's oldest rivalry has a lot of bad blood a flowing after last year's battle in Auburn UGA fans are convinced Tiger defensive tackle Nick Fairly played dirty, driving Bulldog quarterback Aaron Murray into the ground. This time around UGA boasts the better defense, but other than the first two games of the season the Dawgs have hardly been tested. The SEC teams they have wins over have a combined 5 SEC victories. This matchup has had plenty of memorable finishes and do not be surprised if the Plainsmen can muster up a little something extra. Sorry Auburn fans, but you will suffer your first of two losses to Bulldogs in two weeks (next week Auburn hosts Samford).

Other picks (winners in bold)

Alabama at Mississippi State- With the Tide coming off a loss at home and with their nearly impenetrable run defense, this one could get ugly.

Tennessee at Arkansas- The Hogs played well last week at home after two tough starts in Oxford and Nashville. The Vols have struggled tremendously on offense since their quarterback Tyler Bray suffered a season-ending injury against Florida. These trends continue.

Michigan at Illinois- With quarterback Denard Robinson back for Michigan the offense will run more smoothly in this unusually high-scoring Big 12 game.

Florida at South Carolina- Struggling offense versus struggling offense. Which one wins? The better defense, USC.

Miami at Florida State
TCU at Boise State
Oklahoma State at Texas Tech

The Weekend That Will Be: Week 8

Wisconsin at Michigan State- A classic battle of offense versus defense. Wisconsin will be challenged unlike they have been all season by a top-ranked Spartan defense. The weak schedule the Badgers have played thus far was shown as they were ranked a little lower than expected in the first BCS rankings. MSU has won three of the last three home games against Wisconsin, but that streak stops here. Wisconsin will be a huge Spartan fan after Saturday because the Badgers need some help from the BCS computers, which put an added emphasis on strength of schedule and none on margin of victory. On Wisconsin!

Washington at Stanford- As a person who lives in the Eastern time zone, opportunities to see quality PAC-12 football before midnight are a rarity. I am looking forward to seeing two of the county's best quarterbacks going back and forth. On one side of the ball is the Mr. All-Everything, Andrew Luck, of whom you have heard plenty about. The visiting sideline will host Washington's (No it's not Jake Locker) Keith Price, who has saddled the tough job of replacing Jake Locker and done quite well. Some experts say when it is all said and done in Seattle the current QB may be better than the former. The Cardinal should win easily, but if like passing game... enjoy this prime time PAC-12 game.

Auburn at LSU- The only reason this game made the cut is that I like to at least preview all of the ranked teams versus other ranked teams. This game ought not be too much trouble even without two star LSU players. Auburn has started to show their losses on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball were tremendous. LSU is counting down the days until their trip to Tuscaloosa, The Tigers from Baton Rouge are too deep and will take care of business easily at home.

Other picks (winners in bold)
Arkansas at Ole Miss- The annual Houston Nutt Bowl is always one of my father's, and most Razorback fans, favorite games to watch all year. Bobby will show off all of his toys to the former Arkansas coach.

North Carolina at Clemson- Some are calling this a "slip-up" game, but that will come a few weeks later for the Tigers. But watch Taj Boyd struggle a little more against a talented UNC defense.

Tennessee at Alabama- Just like LSU, the Tide wants to look forward the Nov. 5 match-up, but they have a coach that will have none of that. Saban will again prove why he is the greatest coach in the nation.

Penn State at Northwestern- Upset special. The Nittany Lions have gone unnoticed after their loss to Alabama, going undefeated since. But they also almost lost to Temple. It has to catch up at some point.

Georgia Tech at Miami
Oregon at Colorado
Maryland at Florida State

Author's note: I'm sorry for any spelling and/or grammatical mistakes, but I covered high school football until 1 a.m. tonight and have to be at FBC Gainesville to help cook for the youth's BBQ Rib Sale at 7 a.m. I did give it one thorough read, but time is of the essence.

Spurrier helps State, Remeber Richardson's Run, How 'bout them Dogs?

South Carolina was leading by four points with less than ten seconds left in the game against Mississippi State on Saturday. Instead of pulling a New York Giant-sized mistake, Steve Spurrier told quarterback Connor Shaw to run out the clock and take the safety to ensure victory. Confident Gamecock fans, more specifically USC bettors, may have been a little more upset with the Ol' Ball Coach's decision. Why you ask? With the two extra points given to the Bulldogs, Mississippi State covered the +3-point line. An estimated $30 million dollars was lost because Spurrier's decision. So betting Mississippi State fans kind of won, right?
USC's Marcus Lattimore

The bigger loss for South Carolina fans was that sophomore running back Marcus Lattimore went down with a season-ending knee injury. He had been the engine for a struggling Gamecock offense, and had over 800 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns through seven games

Now there is no question Alabama's Trent Richardson is the best running back in the league and possibly player in the country. Don't believe it? Watch this juke and try to tell me differently. Ole Miss' Senquez Golson's ankles are officially broken. This will be Richardson's equivalent to Cam Newton's run versus LSU when T-Rich collects his Heisman.

Speaking of Newton... A team I pull for finally has defeated this tremendous athlete, as the Atlanta Falcons finally scored some second-half points and put the Carolina Panthers away 31-17 on Sunday. That guy was unreal in college and is not far off from it in the pros.

Newton's former team, the Auburn Tigers, have a date with my alma mater, the Samford Bulldogs on Nov. 19. Watch out Plainsmen. My beloved Dogs are on a roll. They collected their third consecutive win on Saturday as they beat Elon for the first time in school history 43-31 on Saturday. It moves the Red and Blue to 4-2 on the season and to 2-2 in the Southern Conference. Embarrassingly, it was Samford's first back-to-back wins as a member of the SoCon. However, it is good to see coach Pat Sullivan has the program headed in the right direction.

Let it be noted I correctly picked all but one game in my weekly "The Weekend That Will Be." It only took me a year, but I am finally getting the hang of this whole picking winners thing.

The Weekend That Will Be: Week 7

Michigan at Michigan State- We will begin to see what the Wolverines and the Spartans (wearing these uni's) are made of this week in their first games against a ranked opponent of the season. This game starts a gauntlet of three games against ranked teams for MSU. The game within a game to watch in East Lansing will be Michigan quarterback against the nation's number one defense. The saying goes, "offense wins games and defense wins championships." I'm not crowning Sparty champion, but I will say they get their fourth consecutive win against Michigan for the first time in 49 years.

Baylor at Texas A&M- They only appeal for me to watch this game is to see how many yards Baylor quarterback and Heisman candidate Robert Griffin III can pile up on the fifth worst passing defense in the Bowl Subdivision. A&M's farewell tour from the Big 12 is not going how the Aggies thought it might. This team was thought to have an outside shot at the national championship and now they are struggling in their own division. Another high-scoring game here, but I am going against my gut (and my grandmother's Bears) and going with the home Aggies.

Arizona State at Oregon- You know it is a weak slate of games for a Saturday when ESPN's College Gameday crew is at a game with an 18-point favorite... Because of their struggles against LSU, people have forgotten about an explosive Oregon offense and sometimes LaMichael James, though  averaging nine yards a carry, overshadows the quarterback Darren Thomas, who has over 1,000 yards and a 15 to 1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Autzen Stadium is another one of those places I will go to someday and watch a ballgame. The Ducks give the Sun Devils their first ever PAC-12 loss.

Florida at Auburn-  A night game at Jordan-Hare, though it pains my father to hear this, is one of the best atmospheres to see a football game, especially if they win. The stadium and crowd will be full of orange and blue. To the game, these two offenses are anything but good. Hopefully, these two offenses will just run the ball. If not, we could see two freshman quarterbacks that are not ready for the big time quite yet. Also, both teams boast stud athletes at running back; Florida with a big-play Chris Rainey and Olympic fast Jeff Demps, and Auburn with thier scat-back Onterio McCaleb and bruiser Michael Dyer. This has been one of the toughest games to pick of the season. Auburn wins at home in a close game. Sounds familiar, huh?

Other picks (winners in bold)
- I am picking the top four teams to win (LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Wisconsin), and I am going with the over of 120 points for the combined wins. Alabama covers 25 points at halftime.

South Carolina at Mississippi State- MSU's Chris Relf can not throw the football, and USC's Conner Shaw is from around my neck of the woods. I am admittedly pulling for him.

LSU at Tennessee- LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis is having a homecoming of sorts to his former school. The only question is how many negative rushing yards with the Tigers hold the Vols to?

Ohio State at Illinois
Oklahoma State at Texas
Kansas State at Texas Tech
Georgia at Vanderbilt

The Weekend That Will Be: Week 6

Oklahoma vs. Texas- One of the best atmospheres in college football is at the Cotton Bowl during the Texas State Fair, disgusting combinations of fried foods and Big Tex can be found at the Red River Rivalry. In the last two years the Longhorns have held a potent Sooner offense to 311 and 361 yards. This year's OU team is better than a year ago, but it is no doubt that Texas coach Mack Brown know how to play the Sooners. The more experienced Oklahoma team is able to come back home with an easy win.

Florida at LSU- One guy you should feel sorry for this week? Florida freshman starting quarterback Jeff Driskell.Really you should feel sorry for anyone on the offensive staff for the Gators, too. Last week it was the punishing Alabama defense and Saturday they have the Blitzin' Bengals. Simply put, it is cruel and unusual punishment. Do not doubt Florida too quickly. They did beat an eventual national champion LSU with a freshman quarterback in 2003. Granted, Chris Leak had three starts under his belt. Watching Tiger defensive back Tyrann Mathieu create turnovers is reason enough to watch this game when LSU starts to run away with it in the second half.

Auburn at Arkansas- The one game I have been to in Fayetteville was a 9-7 snoozefest filled with field goals in 2007. How times have changed... Defense? Where? Not here. Last year the score was in favor of Auburn 62-45 and this year could be close to that because both teams have struggling defenses. Both teams are also coming off games in which they were not favored to win, but Donald W. Reynolds will be rocking on Saturday night and having DE Jake Bequette back on the field will be the difference for the Hogs.

Georgia at Tennessee- With South Carolina having serious issues on the offensive side of the ball, this game has become one of those games we will look back to at the end of the year as a difference maker for the Vols or Dawgs. Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray is the most efficient passer in the SEC but he will be going against a Todd Granthum 3-4 defense that continues improve every week. Georgia also boasts the NCAA leader in interceptions in safety Barari Rambo. The Vols need to get a running game going if they want to win; UGA needs Aaron Murray to step up if they want to have a shot. Based on recent history, Tennessee will blow out Georgia in Neyland. To take a line from Lee Corso, "Not so fast, my friend!" Dawgs win.

Other picks (winners in bold)

Georgia Tech at Maryland
Boston College at Clemson
Illinois at Indiana
Air Force at Notre Dame
Michigan at Northwestern
Texas A&M at Texas Tech
Ohio State at Nebraska

The Weekend That Will Be: Week 2

Alabama at Penn State- The roles have been reversed this season as the Tide goes into a stadium which has more than 100,000 fans and instability at quarterback. However, Alabama is a better team than the Nittany Lion team that came to Tuscaloosa a year ago. The Crimson Tide defense is as good, if not better, than the one that won a championship in 2009. Remember the last time Alabama went into a "(insert team color here)-OUT"? Georgia 2008 ring a bell? Expect much of the same as they head to Happy Valley's white-out.

South Carolina at Georgia- Sources tell me Mark Richt would shave his famed butt-cut hair style to get a "W" in Athens this weekend. The problem is the Bulldogs linemen were man-handled by Bosie State. If the Broncos were able to do that imagine what USC's big uglies will do. Gamecock running back Marcus Lattimore should have big day as he did last season, playing keep-away from Georgia's offense. If he can not get going, a confident Stephen Garcia should gash the exposed Bulldog secondary. Gamecocks take the lead in the SEC East.

Mississippi State at Auburn- At the end of the game which is higher, number of Cam Newton mentions or number of total points for Auburn. I am taking the former. Last week the Tigers came away with a win agianst Utah State becuase of a recovered on-side kick. This week Auburn was the first team since the 1965 Alabama squad to fall out of the AP Top 25 two weeks into the season following a national championship. SEC Offensive Player of the Week, and Bulldog running back, Vic Ballard ran wild last Thursday night and will do it again over a inexperienced Auburn defensive front.

Notre Dame at Michigan- After stadium renovations in the summer, the first night game ever will be held in Ann Arbor. The teams will adorn commemorative uniforms (I'm a sucker for stuff like this.). Notre Dame will also have a new quarterback, as Tommy Rees will take control of the offense. The Fighting Irish had five turnovers last week against South Florida. Michigan's quarterback Denard Robinson will show different looks in the I-formation, making play-action more effective. The Michigan fans will leave in the dark disappointed as Notre Dame turns its losing ways around.

Other picks (winners in bold):
Stillman at Samford- My alma mater suffered a loss at the hands of Georgia Southern, who some believe will win the FCS Championship. The Dogs rebound quickly and get back on the right track.

Virginia Tech at East Carolina- ECU played well against South Carolina last week and the Hokies have lost games they should have won. Hokies keep national championship hopes alive.

Cincinnati at Tennessee- Be careful of looking forward to next week's date with the Florida Gators, Tennessee. Both teams can put up points and little defense will be played.

Brigham Young at Texas- The Longhorns welcome the now independent Cougars, who could join the Big 12 as quickly as next season. Texas stays on track of picking up the pieces after a tough season a year ago.

Oregon State at Wisconsin- My Big 10 darling Badgers pound the ball down the Beavers' throat. Watch OSU running back Malcom Agnew. He put up 223 yards and scored three times in their loss last week.

New Mexico at Arkansas- Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson spreads the ball around a little more this week and stays in the game a little longer this week against an atrocious New Mexico team that won only once last season.

SEC West Power Rankings

The SEC West is without a doubt the toughest division in college football this season and ranks way up there on the list of All-Time Toughest Divisions.

6. Ole Miss- In Oxford they should substitute one of the "i"s in the school's name for an "e," The football program is more of a "Mess"issippi. The only thing for Rebel fans to look forward to is the unveiling of their new Black Bear mascot. One day, Mississippi will get away from the "get a transfer quarterback and use him for a year" plan (Jeremiah Masoli experiment). The Rebels will most likely go with transfer Barry Brunetti over junior college transfers Randall Mackey or Zack Strount. On the defensive side of the ball the Rebels have lost their leader, LB D.T. Shackelford to a torn ACL at a position where they already lacked depth.
Head coach Houston Nutt gave Mississippi two straight Cotton Bowls and started out to high. He will have one more year after 2011 to prove he is capable of coaching in the SEC.  I am scared for Rebel fans he will have some success and hold on to his job and earn an extension.

5. Auburn- The fall in expectations of the defending national champions is of epic proportion. With five returning starters (offense and defense) from last season, inexperience will plague the Tigers this season. The offense will be in the hands of QB Barrett Trotter, a huge step down in capabilities from the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. Auburn will still move the ball thanks to retaining offensive coordinator Gus Malzhan with a huge contract.  They also have plenty of talent at running back with Michael Dyer and Onterio McCaleb. The defense lost the most dominant lineman in college football, DT Nick Fairley, to the NFL Draft and defensive coordinator Ted Roof will work hard to earn his money as well.
Auburn has a talented enough team to make to a second tier bowl game. The Tigers will be overlooked by some teams and create a few upsets.

4. Mississippi State- The boys in Starkville have their program going the opposite way from their rivals, "The School Up North." Bulldog fans could not be more thrilled with their head coach and the direction of the program, with 12 of the top 20 crowds at Davis Wade Stadium since coach Dan Mullen has arrived. RB Vic Ballard is an underrated back in the SEC. QB Chris Relf can lead Mullen's offense, and WR Chad Bumphis, when healthy can make big plays with his speed. The defense is losing its three starting linebackers from last season, but will have a talented secondary.
Enormous strides in a coach's second year are becoming the norm. The Bulldogs need to avoid a third year setback, which could be tough in the SEC West. State will make it will make it to a New Years Day bowl once again if they can win games they should win and sprinkle in an upset or two.

3. LSU- Before the QB Jordan Jefferson was arrested the Bayou Bengals were barely hanging on to the number two position in the power rankings, but trusting the offense to Jarett Lee makes LSU even more of a gamble. Athletic playmakers are abundant on both sides of the ball as the Tigers consistently recruit at the top of the game. Two former five star recruits at receiver should help Lee's transition into the starting role. On defense, there is no reason to see a drop-off from one of the deepest clubs in the league. Two huge sophomore DTs, a potential All-American at LB in Ryan Baker, and the best cornerback tandem in the NCAA will be a force.
The schedule is not nice to the Tigers as they go to Dallas to take on Oregon, travel to West Virginia and go through the SEC West gauntlet. No National Championship for this crew, but they will contend for the SEC title.

2. Arkansas- The loss of RB Knile Davis to a broken ankle is less of a blow to the Razorbacks than LSU losing Jefferson. With Davis gone, there are definite questions, but Arkansas has RBs Ronnie Wingo and Dennis Johnson which have had glimpses of hope. QB Tyler Wilson will try and replace Ryan Mallet and if he does the Hogs will continue to run one of the strongest offenses in the league. Questions arise on the offensive line. Luckily for Wilson, he has the nation's best receiving corps to throw to. On the opposite side of the ball, coach Bobby Petrino has his deepest and most talented lineup since he has been in Fayettville. Petrino's defensive line finally looks more like one that belongs in the SEC with a threat to quaterbacks in DE Jake Bequette. Three-time team leading tackler LB Jerry Frankin returns along with FS Tramain Thomas to a more experienced backfield.
A week four stop in Tuscaloosa could make or break the Razorbacks' chances at a date in Atlanta with an SEC East team.

1. Alabama- The best defense in the SEC returns eight starters and should be the best in the nation this season with a chance at four All-Americans. LB's Dont'a Hightower and Courtnet Upshaw are the best linebacking duo in the nation. On the line, Marcell Dareus is gone and will be missed, but what has become Saban's move the coach will just plug in another player and he will thrive. Look out for DT Josh Chapman. Athletes are everywhere as the secondary returns all four starter including the best safeties tandem in the nation, SS Mark Barron and FS Robert Lester. The starting quarterback battle between A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims has not settled. The offense will lean heavily on RB Trent Richardson, who will finally get his time to be the star for the Crimson Tide after Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram graduated. Alabama will miss WR Julio Jones and his deep threat ability more than most fans may realize.
The Tide should have a shot at the SEC Championship, but Crimson Tide fans are not happy with just a league title. Watch out for Alabama to be in the mix to win the BCS National Championship and extend the SEC's streak to six straight championships.

Treemagedon

Put another reason down on the list of reasons I love college football. The incident in Auburn has everyone in SEC country talking about two oak trees. Die hard University of Alabama fan, and father of daughter Crimson and son Bear, Harvey Almorn Updyke called the Paul Finebaum radio show yesterday of the news that he had poisoned two 130 year old oak trees on Toomer's corner in Auburn, Alabama. University officials say there is a slim chance the trees will survive the poisoning. The trees received more than 60 times the lethal dose of poison from Updyke after Alabama's loss in the 2010 Iron Bowl.

Everything about this story is why I love college football and the South's obsession with it.

- Updyke was still mad from 1983, when Auburn students rolled the two trees in celebration of legendary coach, and Arkansas native, Paul "Bear" Bryant's death. He also made mention of Auburn fans "salting" the score of this years Iron Bowl into the grass of Alabama's campus.

- Updyke broke the news on the Paul Finebaum radio show, a show which is followed by every true football fan in Alabama on a daily basis. He was so mad about a previous Auburn fans call he had to break the news even if his number would be easily tracked.

- The waiting game being played. There is no telling the amount of time and financial resources (bet they wish they had an extra $350K now) that have and will be spent to see if the trees will live, but in the eyes of Auburn fans it is worth it if the oaks live.

- Everyone outside of Auburn in the South is laughing at the prank. Of course Auburn fans are perturbed by the incident, but other fans can't believe it was not done earlier. But it becomes personal when you ask how a Georgia fan would feel if their Arches were torn down or if Ole Miss's sacred Grove was destroyed.

- If the trees are not saved the only way to get it back to how it was is to wait 130 years. There is no quick fix, and Updyke has essentially ruined one of Auburn's proudest traditions.

- Updyke may or may not be safer in jail. His best bet, if he values his life is to go far far away, completely change his identity when he gets out of jail. While in jail, he will immediately need a transfer before some Auburn fan with a life sentence beats the rammer jammer out of him with a bar of soap in a sock.

I hope the rest of the country is taking note. This is worse than the Steve Barman incident at Wrigley. Down here we live for football, especially of the college variety, and loyalty to your team is something you are taught at a very young age. Treemagedon is just a glimpse to the rest of the nation of how serious Saturdays in the fall are to this part of the country.

Today's Happenings

I wish there was time during the day on a normal basis to write about what is going on in the sports world. Or in a dream world, I would have a talk radio show on which I could express my opinions. Maybe one day...

The Cam Newton saga continues as he had a workout for invited members of the media. The one thing I don't like about preparation for the NFL Draft is when armatures hold pro days for scouts. Not much can be learned when there is no defense and the player throws scripted routes. Yesterday, there weren't even pro scouts there. It was strictly media members to get the Cam Newton buzz back up.

In other Newton news Auburn said the athletic department has spent $170,000 in attorney fees this season in the Cam Newton case. 170,000+ 180,000= 2010 National Championship. Not a bad investment.

CBS announced with the help of TBS they will cover every March Madness game this year. Great idea, but I feel like the cutaways while watching one game to buzzer beater after buzzer beater. I think this takes away a little of the magic. Plus, I unlike my father, am not a seasoned veteran at changing channels effectively.

Jerry Sloan resigned from the head coaching job of the Utah Jazz, a title he has heald for more than 23 years. During his tenure he never won a championship, but also sufffered only one losing season. He would have a ring if his best teams hadn't had to go against Michael Jordan in his prime.

The Cleveland Caveliers now have a good argument in the case for the worse team in professional sports history after losing their 26th straight game. They now have the most consecutive losses of any team from the four major professsional sports.

Great article by SI.com's Andy Staples rating recruiting classes they should be.... looking back at how they fared in their time at college.

I know the "sports blogs" may not be the most interesting to my family who wants to know what is going on, but maybe you learned a little something. I know my Mom is learning a lot about sports and that is enough reason to keep on writing.

A Few Thoughts

Doesn't it seem like the media is just begging someone from the four remaining teams in the NFL playoffs to trash talk? More time this week has been spent praising the other team by oppenents, or by the media talking about the lack of trash talk. Can we just talk about the game?

Nothing good has happened to the Miami Heat since LeBron James's "karma" tweet in which he made fun of his former team after a blowout loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Since the tweet LeBron and Dwayne Wade have gotten hurt and  the team has lost its last 5 games. I guess its true what they say when they say what karma is. Right LeBron?

On another tweeting note Michigan QB, or former Michigan QB, Tate Forcier let the world know via twitter that he would be transferring. Way to be a man about it Tate. Hard to think back but Forcier was the starting QB when former Head Coach Rich Rodriguez won his first four games at Michigan.

Florida beat Auburn 45-40 last night. No, that is not a football score. Florida shot a solid 28% (Auburn- 39%) from the field in the win that kept Auburn defeated (0-4) in SEC play. Florida Coach Billy Donavan has never been beat by Auburn and keeps the streak.

Props to New Jersy Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov for saying he has had enough with the Carmelo Anthony trade drama. Who can blame him for not giving up his team for one player that wouldn't sign an extension on his current contract? It is clear Melo is counting down the days until he can sign with the New York Knicks.

Here is one you could have never seen coming... College Football Conference Rankings The SEC finishes the season ranked number one by ESPN Stats & Information. Ok. Everyone saw that coming and maybe this too but, the Moutain West Conference and the Western Athletic Conference were ranked as tougher conferences. Can we please take a closer look at those conferences that get automatic qualification into BCS games?

The 10 Bowls to See

It is here. The wait is over. As we get ready for one of the most exciting times of the year we all forget the mess that is the BCS, but can we agree it did what it was meant to do? Did it not put the top two teams in the nation in a bowl game? Granted, there are aspects that need attention, but those in charge of the BCS are working on those and open to change. Good or bad, we are stuck with the bowl system for now and here are the ten that I am looking forward to the most.

1. Tostitos BCS National Championship Game
No. 2 Oregon vs. No. 1 Auburn
This one should be obvious as to why it is number one. The two best teams, best offenses, and players in the nation are all on one field. I think both offenses start off slow because of the layoff, but then the winner is the defense that can make one more stop than the other.

2. Allstate Sugar Bowl
No. 6 Ohio State vs. No. 8 Arkansas
Two explosive quarterbacks going at one another. The Sugar Bowl pits a typical NFL style quarterback in Ryan Mallet versus the more mobile Terrelle Pryor. It will be interesting to see how Mallet can handle the number two defense and how the improved Arkansas can handle another mobile quarterback. Can OSU’s get past their losing streak, excuse me, beating streak by SEC teams?

3.Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO
No. 5 Wisconsin vs. No. 3 TCU
It will be fun to see if TCU is as good as they think they are and prove that to the rest of the country. They have yet to win in all of their BCS bowl tries. They will get their chance against a huge, smash-mouth Wisconsin team whose play is described by their coach as “real American football.”

4. Discover Orange Bowl
No. 4 Stanford vs. No. 13 Virginia Tech
Though this game looks like a promising one, will anyone be at the Orange Bowl who is known for its bad attendance numbers. Again, here we have a match-up of two different types of quarterbacks. On one hand what looks like will the number one overall pick in April’s NFL draft and the other is a more mobile and winningest quarterback in Hokie history, Tyrod Taylor.

5. Capital One Bowl
No. 16 Alabama vs. No. 9 Michigan State
Easily the best non-BCS game Alabama and Michigan State will meet on New Years Day. Alabama, who is still bitter about a loss in which they blew a 24 point lead, will try and go back to what has made them so good, a solid running game. On the opposite side of the field is a team which is bitter that they are not playing in a BCS game after sharing part of the Big 10 title. It’s always fun when the SEC and Big 10 get together.

6. AT&T Cotton Bowl
No. 10 LSU vs. No. 17 Texas A&M
A team that is on the rise and has played extremely well since a tough loss to Arkansas will play a team that is coming off a loss to Arkansas that would have locked up a Sugar Bowl bid. The Jerry Dome will be rocking as both schools are close and travel well, not to mention that Jerry Jones, Arkansas alumni and member of of their 1964 National Championship team, will not be outdone as far as the environment goes.

7. Chick-fil-A Bowl
No. 20 South Carolina vs. No. 23 Florida State
South Carolina has to go back to the site at which they were embarrassed by the number one team in the country. They will be taking on a team that is just not quite ready to be compared to the FSU teams of old. Jimbo has this team on the right track. Steve Spurrier needs this win or this season, though making it to the SEC Championship will end in disappointment as many of his seasons have.

8. Gator Bowl
No. 21 Mississippi State vs. Michigan
Here again we have up and coming in MSU against a team with a “Rich” heritage in bowl games. Speaking of... Rodriguez will be fighting for his job and beating an SEC team would help his resume tremendously. The Bulldogs, however, couldn’t be happier with their coach as he is the envy of all programs head coach hunting.

9. AutoZone Liberty Bowl
Georgia vs. No. 25 UCF
Really the only reason this game is of any real interest is one of UCF’s  starting wide receivers is from Rome, Georgia and gets a chance to play his home state team in front of many family members and friends. But seriously the UCF team is nothing to look past for the Bulldogs. They are a very talented team, maybe the second best in Florida this year. There is still a lot of pressure on Mark Richt, and losing this game would not help his cause.

10. Hyundai Sun Bowl
Notre Dame vs. Miami
Criminals vs. Catholics... No it doesn’t have the same ring to it as it used to, but this game shows the state of college football right now. Miami and Notre Dame of today are not your dad’s Miami and Notre Dame. Winning this game will be a huge stepping point to get things back on track for the winner.

Championship Weekend

They say there is no playoff system, but what is this championship weekend come down to? Two teams must win to get their shot at a national championship. Experts can complain about the bowl system but the system we have now sure does make for an exciting last weekend of football.

Auburn vs. South Carolina- Did you see the special on ESPN about the SEC championship titled Atlanta? It hit the importance of this game right on the head. Yes, for the Tigers it most likely means a chance at the national championship and a Sugar Bowl bid for the Gamecocks, but it also means they are the best team in the South, a very important title in these parts. South Carolina must stop Cam Newton but no one has figured it out yet. It ain’t happening this week either. Sure South Carolina might play well for a while but the Tigers are playing for something bigger and Newton officially locks up the Heisman.

Oregon vs. Oregon State- Another “playoff game” atmosphere in Corvallis, Oregon, as the Ducks go down the road 40 miles and try to win the Pac-10. Oregon State has been the home to many upsets recently and would like nothing more than to ruin their rival’s run to the championship. Here is there chance. They are going to slow the game down to have a chance but their D isn’t good enough to do it. Ducks win and have roses in their mouths at the end of the night.

Florida State vs. Virginia Tech- Maybe this ACC Championship will have more than 10,000 people in Charlotte at the stadium. As good as the SEC Championship game is shows how the ACC just doesn’t have it quite right. If there are people there watching or not Virginia Tech is winning the game, sorry Boise. The Hokies are hot, winning their last 10 games. It really is about when you win in college football. Florida State has made huge strides this year and is headed to the right direction, but the Hokies are experienced.

Oklahoma vs. Nebraska- In the best game that no one is talking about, Nebraska is playing their last game in the Big 12. If you going to leave, this is the way to go. Too bad they don’t win in their last Big 12 match up. Nebraska’s games have been close recently and just have not been the same team since QB Taylor Martinez hurt his ankle. His motor is what makes this offense go. Oklahoma, on the other hand, has had to play its way into this game and is motivated to win and they will.

Other Picks (in bold):
Connecticut at South Florida- UConn is going to the Orange Bowl without a single vote in the Coach’s Poll.

Utah State at Boise State- I bet Boise K Kyle Brotzman doesn’t miss a kick. Too bad it’s one week too late

Southern Methodist at UCF- My high school QB and favorite UCF player WR Brian Watters gets a ring and a trip to the Liberty Bowl.

Is This Real Life?

I have decided every once in a while I will do a post about what is going on in the world of sports. There are things that happen during the year that, in the world of sports, just do not make sense. For example...

1. Boise State loses. Can you believe it? The one week that I have faith in the Broncos to pull out a victory they fail me. Maybe we aren't giving the WAC the credit its due. Just maybe Boise does play a tough schedule and should be considered for the National Championship game. Yeah right! Losing to Nevada is not a good loss. Nevada would be handled by the sixth best SEC team, Mississippi State, easily. Oh well, it was a good run this year and I am sure we will hear the same arguments for the little guy next year.

2. Auburn came back to win in Tuscaloosa. After falling behind 24-0 in the first half the Tigers found a way to win in Bryan-Denny Stadium for the first time ever. If everything had gone just as Alabama wanted it to, not being stopped in the red zone a few times, the score would have looked more like 42-0. Those stops hurt Alabama by taking the more than 100,000 people out of the game. I give credit to Auburn and its resiliency to come back under such tough conditions. No way they shouldn't play for the national title.

3. Arkansas may play a BCS bowl. Really? In the most difficult conference to play in, with 5 ranked teams in the West, Arkansas played their way to the top? I am so used to settling for the Cotton Bowl but not this year. The Razorbacks have actually lived up to expectations and, with an Auburn win in the SEC Championship should play in the Sugar Bowl for the first time in 30 years. Even more surprising is the old man will be pulling or the Tigers come Saturday. I never thought I would see the day.

4. Sticking with football and moving to the professional ranks, the Falcons could be the best team in the NFL. Again, really? A franchise that just last year had its first back to back winning seasons is considered by many to be the favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. The team is clicking with a calm quarterback, Matt Ryan. They have won three games within the last minute of the game and have not had a turnover in 4 games. The next three weeks will tell a lot as the Dirty Birds are on the road, not in the friendly confines of the Georgia Dome where they are 19-1 over the past three years. That is a serious home field advantage.

5. The Miami Heat continue to struggle. They are now 10-8 and the 5th best team in the Eastern Conference. Who saw this much of an adjustment period coming. So much for those predictions that the Heat would break the 1996 Bulls record of 72 wins. They would have to finish out the season at 62-2 to tie that record. Not happening. Miami has serious offensive woes and has yet to figure out how to play like a team.

6. Jeter maybe not a Yankee. Derek Jeter, along with his agent, is under negations to further his career as a Yankee. He is coming off of his worst year as a professional and seeking $20 million dollars a year. The Yankee organization is trying to run the franchise like any business and pay for what they are getting. The aging captain has meant a lot to the team and he, along with many New Yorkers feel as if he is due the money just because he means so much to the history of the Yanks. New York management is not budging much. Meanwhile Jeter has received offers from World Series Champion San Fransisco Giants and the arch rival, Boston Red Sox. Can you imagine Jeter getting his 3000th hit in a Red Sox jersey?

Be sure to check the blog to see my picks for Championship Weekend and after all of the BCS hoopla has settled, my 2010 Bowl Game Prediction Spectacular.

Best College Football Weekend

I am coming to you live from Vicksburg, Mississippi. Because I am on vacation I am trying to work when I can. I will be updating this as I can, but here is the work I have done so far.

Auburn vs. Alabama- I have had more trouble trying to justify a winner in this match-up more than any all season. Alabama is the favorite, according to Vegas, has home field advantage, and their Head Coach Nick Saban has had extra time to prepare for this game. Auburn, on the other hand, though lacking any as semblance of a defense all season, has not been stopped. But Auburn has yet to play a good team on the road and has struggled against the run, the Tide’s specialty. It is because of this I am going to take the Alabama Crimson Tide. Auburn fans will simply not be heard. Heck, the Auburn band has been moved to the upper deck! These people just don’t like each other. Alabama will rely heavily on the run but Alabama QB Greg McElroy will have to make a few important 3rd down conversion passes to Julio Jones. The Tide win in a close one, and Tuscaloosa implodes from the celebrating.

LSU vs. Arkansas- A huge game that will shape the BCS bowl picture as much as any adds to what is already one of the best young rivalries. With a win both teams figure to lock up a bid to the Sugar Bowl. For Arkansas and LSU, success of the season rides on this game. Arkansas fans have felt all year that this year was crucial in the turnaround under Head Coach Bobby Petrino. Can the Hogs deliver results after such high expectations? The previous 5 games have been decided by less than 13 points so expect a tight one. The game will come down to whether or not a stout LSU defense can stop an Arkansas offense that has been rolling. In one of the most fun match ups all weekend two top 10 NFL prospects will go head to head as Arkansas QB will try to pass on LSU CB Patrick Peterson. The Rock will be doin just that this afternoon, rockin' as the Razorbacks figure out the LSU defenses and, depending on the unpredictable computers, lock up a bid to their first BCS Bowl.

Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss- For the first time in my life I will spend the day in Mississippi on the day of the Egg Bowl. Nationally, this game does not get the recognition that some rivalry games get, but don’t tell the folks from Mississippi that. Heck, the Bulldogs Head Coach Dan Mullen will not even say the words “Ole Miss,” in stead calling them “the team from up North.” I am watching the game with die hard State fans and one thing is certain, it is always good when Ole Miss loses, but so much better when State has the pleasure of giving them the loss. With that said, the only factor that makes this game close is the game is played in Oxford. Mississippi will have a hard time stopping the counter attack of State QB Chris Relf and RB Vick Ballard and really has no offensive threat of their own. Ole Miss QB Jeremiah Masoli was supposed to save the season for the Rebels but has failed miserably. The hurt continues today in an intense atmosphere, and State people have bragging rights for another year.

Arizona at Oregon- The game tonight in Autzen Stadium is the last true test the Ducks of Oregon will face before the national championship. Senior night versus a good Arizona Wildcats team that is coming of of two conference losses will be tough but doable for Oregon. Arizona beat Iowa earlier this year at home and has shown flashes of things to come from Head Coach Mike Stoops. The flashes will not be enough tonight as  Oregon running back LeMichael James leads this high scoring offense to another victory.

Oklahoma
vs. Oklahoma State- The Battle for Bedlam has extra meaning this year as the two teams involved are fighting for a spot in the Big 12 Championship. The rivalry has been dominated by big brother Oklahoma, winning 80 of the 104 games. Oklahoma State is seeking the teams first 10 win season in school history in what was supposed to be a "rebuilding year," but I think they will have to wait until their bowl game to get it. The Cowboys will not handle the pressure of the beating the Sooners, who have been there done that. It is a struggle, but Oklahoma QB Landry Jones, with the help of a big performance from RB Demarco Murray, will pull out the W.

Other Picks (in bold):
